The best way to dress for cold snowy conditions is by layering - and generally one more layer than you would wear yourself. You need to keep your child warm and dry, but not overheated so layers allows them to remove items if needed. Basically three layers are recommend. Firstly, a thin layer of wool or cotton thermal underwear as a base. The next layer is for insulation so fabrics such as fleece or wool. This might be pants/leggings with a long sleeve top. And then the final layer to protect from snow and rain, consists of a snowsuit or ski pants/bib with a jacket. And don't forget the extremities such as hands, neck, head and feet. You will need waterproof gloves and boots, as well as a scarf and beanie - or find a jacket with a snug hood.
As always, it's tempting to buy clothes a few sizes too big to "make them last" or squeeze your kid into last year's outfit, to get another season out if. Unfortunately oversized clothing will only make you child uncomfortable and possibly wet and cold as snow clothes need to fit snugly to be effective. But if they're too small - especially items such as boots, there will be no end of pain for everyone. So choose pieces that fit well, there can be a tiny bit of wiggle room, just not too much. Of course accessories such as mittens, hats and scarves will last a little longer.
